INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION, NSUKKA
2020 - ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE
THEME: EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL SECURITY
VENUE:
Princess Alexandra Auditorium, University
Of Nigeria, Nsukka
DATE: 24th – 27th AUGUST, 2020
CONFERENCE
RATIONALE:
Nigeria
is currently witnessing a general trend of insecurity as widely reflected in
the increasing incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, human
trafficking, assassinations, militancy, terrorism, Boko haram insurgency,
herdsmen attacks etc in various parts of the country. It would also be recalled
that Nigeria had previously witnessed “a decade of trouble” (1960- 1970), a
period that also generated series of conflicts and ultimately an internecine civil
war which like many other conflicts threatened the peace and corporate
existence of the country as a modern state. Some of the major consequences of
these conflicts and other related crisis include loss of lives and property,
economic stagnation, political instability and social disharmony among others.
Indeed, these conflicts and other related security issues have justifiably
earned Nigeria the notorious ranking as one of the 15 vulnerable nations of the
world in 2009. In a recent related development, the Global Terrorism Index (2018)
rated Fulani herdsmen attack as the second biggest internal security threats in
Nigeria after the Boko Haram insurgency. Thus, the state of national security
in the country is not only alarmingly worrisome but also of immense concern to all
Nigerians and even the International community at large. Although efforts have
been made by various arms of government and relevant security agencies to
manage insecurity in Nigeria, the solutions remain inconclusive and elusive.
Without doubt, security is crucial to the corporate existence of Nigeria and
needs to be properly anchored on sound and well articulated educational policies
for meaningful social, economic, political, scientific and technological
development of the country. This position calls for a well articulated
educational paradigm shift and strategies that could assist citizens to acquire
requisite knowledge, values and civic orientations and dispositions for unity, harmony
and sustainable national security in Nigeria. The above challenge prompted the
Institute of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka as part of its
professional research mandate and extension service duties to organize the 2020
Annual National Conference on the theme “Education for sustainable national
security”. To this end, the aim of this conference is to bring together
leading academics, educationists, political and social scientists, researchers as
well as scholars to exchange and share research experiences, views and ideas on
the conference theme as well as related sub-themes with a view to providing
inter disciplinary platform and perspectives on sustainable solutions to

INSTITUTE
OF EDUCATION
2019
ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE AND HOME-COMING
THEME: ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
CONFERENCE RATIONALE:
Entrepreneurship Education is globally acknowledged
as one of the effective means of promoting sustainable societal transformation
and development. In Nigeria, this position is not only aptly expressed in the
National Policy on Education document but has also been vigorously pursued
through various education reform initiatives, efforts and actions by
governments with the aim of making education much more responsive to local
needs, problems and aspirations within the context of global challenges and
technological demands. These efforts became necessary due to rising trend of
youth unemployment caused by inadequate private and public paid jobs, gaps
between school curricular offerings and needed employable skills /competencies,
poverty, corruption and perceived weak/ ineffective political leadership. This
state of affairs necessitated the introduction of entrepreneurship and
vocational-oriented education by federal government especially at the upper
basic, senior secondary and tertiary levels of the Education system.
Justifiably the aim was to promote youth employment/ job creation and
empowerment, poverty reduction and wealth generation for sustainable national
development.
Indeed, entrepreneurship education is adjudged
suitable for creating desirable changes in mental and attitudinal orientation
of students especially from “take a job
mentality to make a job mindset”. Entrepreneurship education is therefore
not only very relevant and timely at this auspicious period of economic
hardship in Nigeria, but also holds the prospect of helping youths acquire
creative skills /competencies needed to become self-reliant, self employed and
functional. However, as laudable as the above government efforts would seem as
reflected in the introduction of entrepreneurship education and the 35 trade
subjects in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, nothing
concrete may be achieved if strategic stakeholders do not carry out periodic
assessment of their operational outcomes. This need among others motivated the
Institute of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka to choose the theme
“Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable National Development” for her 2019
Annual National Conference and Home Coming events.
